Alkaline Foods and fermented foods

Alternative health care practitioners are telling people to focus on an alkaline diet as lower acid blood levels are indicators of sickness and are often associated with people who have cancers. This can be confusing for people who are new to this philosophy and they tend to avoid foods that have a low pH because they think ALL foods with a low pH are "acidic". When people talk about alkaline and acidic foods, they shouldn't interpret this directly with the food's pH reading. It has been determined by the minerals in that particular food are more of a reason why the food is considered alkaline or acidic.

Foods that have an "acidic" function contain more electro-negative elements such as chlorine (Cl-), phosphate, sulfur, etc. Food that have an "alkaline" function contain more electro-positive elements such as sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, etc. The common method used to determine this is to burn the food at an extremely high temperature and measure the mineral content found in its ashes.
For example, an orange itself is acidic, but because it contains high levels of calcium, potassium, etc, it is actually an "alkaline" foods. This is because calcium and potassium in oranges will help make your blood alkaline. Basically, high fat, high cholesterol, lots of fried foods, high sugar, lots of processed foods, etc.

Believe it or not, not all American diet is unhealthy. Some of the things that we serve at my house are:

Roasted Pork Loin, Grilled Corn on the Cob, Grilled Asparagus

Turkey Burgers with Baked Cajun Sweet Potato Fries

Grilled/broiled/baked Chicken, steamed spinach, three bean salad

Grilled shrimp/scallops/salmon/tilapia with any kind of steamed veggies

The list could go on and long as you don't cook all of your food in tons of bad fats, add butter or other fatty seasonings, it can be healthy.
